"You Cannot Legislate Morality”

Written by Peter Friberg.

…Or so the saying goes. The reason why people argue on that subject, is that on the one hand, you can create rules or laws that set a certain standard. And enforce those rules. But on the other hand, even while attaining compliance, the rule-makers have not necessarily changed the beliefs of the population they are imposing the rules upon.

So what does this have to do with freight? Steve Banker penned a piece at Forbes.com where he argues about whether you should trust a broker or shipper to handle your freight. No offense to Mr. Banks, but it’s a worthless argument. It’s like the argument about whether or not you can legislate morality. Both sides of the argument have valid points. The key is, find a representative you trust, whether they are a brokerage or a shipper, and work with them (disclaimer: we are both a broker and a carrier).

If you’re looking for a shipping or brokerage vendor you can trust, please give us a call and see what Zion can do for you.

Are Drivers Logging Too Many Hours?

Written by Peter Friberg.

In an effort to improve highway safety, a law was put into place that, “…truck operators would again have to include two 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. periods in any use of a 34-hour restart and be limited to using the restart just once a week…

While that sounds all well and good, after all who doesn’t want safer highways? The reality of it is, it may have no impact on safety statistics and may serve only to increase transportation and consumers goods’ costs? The truth is, it hasn’t been measured. And now that rule may be implemented, or rather, the stay of enforcement may be lifted by next week (9/30).

Congress, however, is planning on end-around and is working on laws that would remove this provision. Pres. Obama is threatening to veto those bills.

What is the best answer? Does anyone really know?

...By Truck or By Train...

Written by Peter Friberg.

Intermodal transport is gaining in popularity among shippers despite “suboptimal” service and an admission that, “We’ve got a long way to go.”

The CEO of an intermodal transport company sugar-coated one problem, “We need to do anything we can to accelerate turn time at [terminals].”  Put more plainly, “Terminals can’t be used as parking lots,” said another.
